Summer Internships (mid-May through mid-August)

Producer Services/Outreach Internships:  Assist with the development and delivery of pork producer education programs offered by the National Pork Board; work at various education activities during World Pork Expo; work with Pork Quality Assurance Plus, Trucker Quality Assurance Program, and Youth PQA program.  Ag Ed major preferred; strong communication skills including written and telephone skills.

  

Marketing Internship:  Assist in various activities and programs implemented within the Marketing Department; assist in development and coordination of specific programs, compile and evaluate market research, contribute ideas and feedback regarding different program initiatives, participate in departmental activities.  Internship is ideal for candidates interested in marketing and/or public relations; strong communication skills a must.

  

Communications Internship:  Assist with day-to-day activities that include print, audio and visual communications about the pork industry and related news on a national level.  Applicants will benefit from having an agricultural background and/or academic emphasis in animal science, agriculture journalism, agricultural communications or journalism.

  

Science and Technology Internship:  Involves working in the areas of swine production systems, swine welfare, swine health, pork safety, public health, worker safety and environmental science.  Interns will participate in the planning and operation of meetings at local, state and national levels; assist with NPB activities at World Pork Expo; work on on-going or independent projects within the program areas listed above.

Summer Semester Internships:

Intern Training Program:  The internship program is designed to give students who are interested in pursuing careers in commercial pork production exposure to Circle Four’s production system and corporate culture to encourage them to work for Circle Four when they graduate and to assist in recruiting efforts at the college they attend.  This program is designed to be nine-week program but will be customized to each individual intern’s needs and interests based on how many weeks they are available to work in the summer.  Interns will be paid $9.00 per hour based on an average 45 hours per week.  The program will generally consist of the following components:  Company orientation (1 day), internship orientation (1 day), sow farm (4 weeks), nursery (2 weeks), finisher farm (2 weeks), and boar stud (1 day).  Interns will also be required to complete Pork Quality Assurance, Trucker Quality Assurance, and read 7-Habits of Highly Effective People.

Summer Internship

Spring Internship (January to June)

EE Ranches is located near the Red River in Whitesboro, TX and is a full service breeding, foaling, and embryo transfer facility breeding approximately 700 mares annually.  Internship includes a breeding program (preparing mares to be palpated and inseminated; involved with semen collection, analysis, cooling and transporting semen, health care and medical treatment of horses); office administration (receive and process orders for transported semen, help with monthly statements, shipping and receiving of mares, assist clients); foaling program (involvement with pre-foaling vaccinations, monitoring of mares prior to foaling, assist mares during foaling process, care and treatment of newborn foals).

Spring and Fall Internship

The Kentucky Equine Management Internship program is dedicated to improving the opportunities for college students wishing to purse an interest in the field of equine management.  KEMI provides students the opportunity to integrate academic studies with practical experience, leadership and responsibility as a contributing participant on a Central Kentucky horse farm.  Aside from farm commitments, students are introduced into a network of equine professionals representing multifaceted careers in the equine profession.  KEMI is offered two times each year, once during the spring breeding and foaling season and once during the fall sales and yearling breaking and training season.  Each session is 22 weeks in duration and coincides with the labor demands on area horse farms. Application deadline for spring session is October 31 and for fall session April 30.  Costs include:  Application fee $35; Tuition Deposit $265; Tuition, books and related material $1200 = Program Total $1500.

Summer Internship (May through August)

Equine Management:  The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute is located in Chazy, NY about 40 miles south of Montreal in the Champlain Valley.  For over a quarter of century Miner Institute has conducted programs in education and research, foremost of which are in residence undergraduate programs in agriculture and environmental science.  The emphasis of this program is the management of a commercial equine facility and improved horse handling and training skills.  Students will learn ground training techniques including halter breaking, lungeing, longlining, and ground driving.  Students will experience working with Morgan horses at varied ages and abilities in saddleseat, huntseat, dressage, western pleasure and driving.  Students will also become proficient at stallion handling, semen collection, and processing as well as broodmare management.

Summer Internship

Hoard’s Dairy:  Opportunity to work in a 232-cow facility with a new double- 10 herringbone parlor complete with electronic ID, daily weights, milk flow rates, and activity monitoring.  Involves working with farm manager and herdsman on day-to-day cow care activities, including fresh cow needs, vet check days, hoof trimming, A.I. work, calf care, and embryo transfer.  Internship is flexible based on applicant’s availability.

Hoard’s Dairyman – The National Dairy Farm Magazine:  Work with editorial team to gather articles, plan layout, edit copy, and approve graphic design for The World Dairy Expo Supplement magazine; opportunity to do technical writing and work on Hoard’s Dairyman web site.  Interns will travel to dairy farms across their U.S. to write farm stories and gather Round Table leads.

The Hilmar Dairy Internship program is a management level experience focused on large-scale Jersey dairy operations.  The participating dairies are located in Hilmar, CA.  All of the dairies are large-scale dairies milking more than 1,000 cows.  Participating dairies include:  Clauss Jersey Dairy, Jim Ahlem Farm, Yosemite Jersey Dairy, Nyman Brothers Dairy, Hilmar Jersey, D&E Jersey, and Valsigna Farms.  Students who participate in this internship will be able to gain a deeper understanding of managing a west coast style dairy, develop important hands-on experience, and create a network of contacts in which participants can build their career.  The program has eight modules to complete throughout the two-month program.  In addition to the basic cow and dairy operations skills, the program highlights management issues such as employee relations, government regulations, and fiscal responsibility.  To be eligible to participate, applicants must be a college junior or senior student earning a degree in dairy science, dairy management or related major, be a U.S. citizen, and be available to work full-time during the program term (8 weeks).  For further information, please go to http://www.dairyintern.com.  Application deadline:  February 15.

Communications Internship:  Main responsibilities include production of yearly calendar and writing press releases and customer testimonials; help coordinate logistics for some trade show booth materials; assist with desktop publishing projects, such as preparing advertisements, brochures and flyers; perform clerical duties, such as photocopying, collating mailings, and filing.  Background/skills needed:  Major in communications, or in dairy- and animal-science with a communication focus, or in a related area of study; must have strong writing skills and be detailed-oriented; must have completed basic journalism and/or public relations coursework; familiarity with dairy cattle pedigrees.

  

Marketing Internship:  Main responsibilities include assisting the dairy-sire marketing department with preparing cattle for photography, including selecting, clipping, grooming and fitting cattle; assist dairy-sire marketing department to coordinate and execute in-house projects; perform clerical duties such as photocopying, collating mailings, and filing.  Background/skills needed:  Major in dairy or animal science, or in a related area of study; understanding of the dairy industry; experience with fitting cattle; familiarity with dairy cattle pedigrees; 4-H, FFA and/or collegiate dairy judging experience preferred.

Drowsy Water Ranch is a dude and guest ranch.  They have internship positions for their horse program staff for the summer season (mid-May to mid-September).  The horse program includes a heavy emphasis on horse care and handling, riding instruction, and trail guiding.  This job is working with people along with horses.  Beginning salaries vary depending upon experience.  Room and board is provided, and staff members earn approximately $3000 in tips for the summer.
